The Regency style is a style of furniture that dates from around 1715 to 1723, the period of the regency of Philippe d'Orléans during the minority of Louis XV. It succeeded the Louis XIV style and preceded the Louis XV style. The main materials used were oak, beech, walnut, fir, poplar, blackened pearwood and exotic, Asian and African woods imported by the Compagnie des Indes. Veneering, marquetry, gold-leaf gilding and mercury-gilded bronzes were the most common techniques used during this period. Decorative motifs include :
background motifs: squares, lozenges
human motifs: espagnolette (originally by the bronze sculptor Cressent), female masks
animal motifs: monkeys, shells, bat wings
plant motifs: palmette, sunflower, gadrooned leaves, acanthus leaves
geometric Boulle marquetry motifs
exotic motifs: peacock feather, pagodas
