Vintage lacquered metal wardrobe by Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax, 1950

This rare piece of furniture was designed by Willy Van Der Meeren for Tubax in the early 1950s. The black-lacquered metal frame has two wooden shelves inside. The door is in green-painted metal and has a wooden handle characteristic of Van Der Meeren's design. We've chosen to keep it in its original condition with stains on the wood and metal to preserve its authenticity, but it can be restored to like-new condition if you wish. This type of cabinet was probably made to measure for a specific order at the time. Very few exist, which is why it has great collector's value and is considered a true collector's item. Willy van der Meeren (1923 - 2002) was a Belgian architect and furniture designer. He was an important figure in Belgian furniture design in the 1950s. His designs were presented at the 1951 "La Jeune Décoration" exhibition and competition in Brussels, although he did not win the prize. However, his work attracted the attention of Jan Vits, owner of the Tubax metalworking company. Van Der Meeren and Tubax collaborated.
