About this vintage design furniture

About the furniture. This sofa is a design by Wikkelsø and taken into production by the company of Niels Eilersen. It is a spectacularly shaped and very rare 2-seater sofa with a very beautiful frame of full teak wood. The design details are beautiful, just look at the beautiful twist in the armrest or the beautiful black upholstery in genuine leather. The legs, which taper somewhat towards each other at the bottom, are not only optically strong, but also constructively a real challenge, they are proof that both design and construction are of an exceptionally high level. This Mid Century piece of furniture has been a true design classic for years and is globally recognized as a world-class design. In a very nice original condition and can rightly be called very beautiful. Traces of use so minimal that they are almost negligible. About the designer. Today, very little biographical information can be found about the Danish architect-designer Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999). Nevertheless, the rich, organic quality of his designs in today's vintage market confirms his status as an active proponent of Scandinavian modernism in the post-war era. Like most Danish designers at the time, Wikkelsø studied at a leading academy. He specialized in designing and manufacturing cabinets. He eventually graduated from the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts. He later held positions at the furniture maker Jacob Kjaer and the architectural firm of Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen. In 1944 Wikkelsø moved to Århus to work as an interior designer. In 1954 he started designing his own furniture and a few years later he founded a workshop. Like many of his Danish contemporaries such as Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner for example - Wikkelsø's designs emphasize formal simplicity and sculptural silhouettes. Wikkelsø's background in the manufacture of cabinets gave him a broad knowledge and understanding of materials, this combined with a fine eye for detail were the ingredients for some uniquely beautiful designs. He worked with teak and rosewood to form delicate sculptural shapes. Wikkelsø believed that furniture should be built to last, while relieving and relaxing the body, as well as being pleasing to the eye. Notable designs from Wikkelsø's career include T118 Coffee Table (ca. 1950s), Gyngestol Rocking Chair (1958) and Model 91 Lounge Chair and Ottoman for Mikael Laursen (ca. 1959). A number of Danish manufacturers produced Wikkelsø's designs, such as C.F. Christensen, Holger Christiansen, Eilersen, Farstrup, Silkeborg, and Soren Willadsen.
