Vintage Abedeh rug

Antique abedeh rug with the classic zili sultan "vase and peacock" motif. Closely related to the ancient motif of a tree on which two birds land, the zil-i-sultan seems to have been invented in Persia at the end of the 19th century by a court official of the Qadjar dynasty, its name meaning "shadow of the sultan". The colors are based on natural dyes and shimmer on an ivory background. This is a superb example of the type, with soft pure wool, the red ground border is of unusual design and frames the rug well.
