Vintage dressing table by Jindrich Halabala for UP Brno, 1950

This mid-century dressing table was produced by the famous UP Brno furniture factory in the late 1940s, where Jindrich Halabala was the artistic director at the time.This dressing table is a rare piece and we believe it was part of a collection of furniture specifically designed for the American and British market and was shown at the 1947 New York exhibition. Unfortunately, changes in the political situation in Czechoslovakia after 1948 meant that this huge commercial proposal for the Anglo-American market was never realized. However, some pieces were made and sold in limited quantities.This piece consists of a rectangular mirror supported by a thick wooden frame at the top and bottom, which is elegantly connected to a rectangular cabinet with rounded corners.The cabinet itself has two storage spaces in the corners and two sliding shelves in the middle. The striking birch wood pattern works well with the balanced proportion of the doors and handles, the decoration of the vertical lines and the black glass top.The round shaped doors with their concealed integrated handles are a testament to UP Brno's high technical capability and standards at the time.The dressing table is in perfect original condition after being completely refurbished to its former glory. There is minimal wear and tear over the years. Our experienced craftsman performed the restoration to the highest standard, using French polishing technique and Shellac varnish to hand finish the entire piece.
