Vintage beech rocking chair by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Asko
About this vintage design furniture
A classic of Scandinavian design, this beech rocking chair was designed by renowned Finnish designer Ilmarii Tapiovaara, who was inspired by traditional Finnish chairs before applying his own modern design approach to this creation. Constructed using an age-old method, the slatted back, lacquered black like the frame and arched glides, contrasts strikingly with the smooth, slightly rounded modern curves of the contoured seat in varnished natural wood. From 1951 to 1960, Ilmari Tapiovaara won no less than six gold medals at the Milan Triennial, more than any other designer, as well as the Good Design Award in Chicago and numerous awards in Finland.
