Vintage vase with floral detail by Lachenal

Rare art nouveau vase, exquisite, with floral details on the body and sinew vines at the base, made by a member of the famous Lachenal family.The history of the Lachenal dynasty is well documented, beginning with Edmond (1855 - 1948) and continuing with his two sons, Raoul and Jean-Jacques, who were also great ceramists.The entire family, as a whole, was noted as an important protagonist of French ceramics until the 1930s, but it was certainly Edmond, who became known as one of the leading figures of the Art Nouveau movement.Known for introducing opaque, brightly colored, matte velvet glazes, working in both earthenware and stoneware, his work evolved from the influences of late 19th century Japanese prints, and then moved from ornamental images painted on surfaces, to more organic and sculptural forms, with plants, flowers, animals or even people, which would form the actual shape of the pieces, themselves. In addition to his hand-signed ceramics, he also created an original hallmark to identify his work, which was apparently used by his sons, at a later date.This splendid vase, has the above attributes. It is an intense, vibrant, brilliant azure turquoise color, with an organic form carved like a small tree stump made of flowers and petals, coupled with sinewy vines at the base. It also bears the die stamp, which is clearly visible below the base. The body remains intact with no cracks or chips on the surface. It is not possible to determine whether or not the intention was to glaze only a portion of the base, but this does not affect the overall beauty of this piece (see photos).The vase is in excellent original condition for a piece of this age, as it was obviously well cared for and protected by its previous owner.A wonderful piece of history, which remains timeless and would be a wonderful addition to any collector of Lachenal and other Art Nouveau ceramics.
