Among the mythical armchairs of the 20th century lies a rare gem:the Lady Chair by Marco Zanuso. Why has this chair achieved iconic status? How is it that it survives the years without taking a wrinkle? All these answers and more await you in this article! First of all let's go back to the designer of the Lady chair, Marco Zanuso. Born in 1916 in Italy, he became passionate about architecture at an early age, which he studied at the Polytechnic of Milan. In 1945, the young graduate opened his own practice. Passionate about design and the desire to share his knowledge, he co-edits the magazine Domus with Ernesto N.Rogers. In 1957, Zanuso began a collaboration with the renowned German designer Richard Sapper. Together, they produced a range of particularly functional television and radio sets. These products would greatly influence the use of plastic in various consumer products. They allowed a consequent reduction in prices! The research and work of Zanuso is the source of great advances: he was one of the first designers in his country to take an interest in the integration of new technologies in the product industrialization process. His talent has been rewarded many times: he received multiple gold medals and the Grand Prix of the Milan Triennale but also five Compasso d'Oro between 1956 and 1985! It was in the very early 1950s that Marco Zanuso designed the Lady armchair. Presented for the first time in 1951 during the IXth Triennale of Milan, it was an immediate success! Its comfort is truly incredible for the time. It is the result of an innovative technique that marks the beginning of modern upholstery. To achieve this exceptional result, the Italian designer was inspired by the automotive sector by studying the different production techniques. He then understood the importance of the relationships between each piece but also retained certain materials. He then adapted these learnings to the creation of seats by proposing a separate realization of the parts and by using foam rubber and Nastrocord. Thanks to this, the chair Lady offers different degrees of padding depending on the body's needs: a revolution in the design world! The Lady armchair is uncommonly elegant: its soft, welcoming curves remain timeless. Marco Zanuso has shaken up design with his modern vision of functionality but also with his avant-garde approach to aesthetics!
