Exhibition: Under pressure, densified wood

"Under Pressure, Densified Wood" is an exhibition presented by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris since March 28, 2014, and until September 14, 2014. that traces the evolution of woodworking techniques in design, with iconic pieces and other recent creations from the young guard of modern design.

Woodworking through time

The exhibition traces the major innovations in woodworking. Divided into two sections, the exhibition first looks back at the historical context with the technical developments around wood, an ancestral and composite material consisting mainly of fibers and resin. For centuries we have tried to tame it to make it play more and more varied roles. First it was carved, then, in the 19th century, the perspectives multiplied: with the discovery of bending, which implies the contribution of humidity, but also of hardened wood, which makes complex patterns appear, thanks to mouldings. The twentieth century will see the development of other processes: plywood, glued laminate and then, in the twenty-first century, retified wood.

An introductory course

The visitor is thus invited to discover a selection of furniture pieces, dating from the nineteenth century to the 1960s, from the collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts. Works by Thonet Gebrûder, Alfred Latry et Cie, Alvar Aalto, Charles Eames and Grete Jalk thus allow him to grasp the evolution of wood techniques. The second section reveals the creations of young designers with densified wood.

An enriching and instructive exhibition that we highly recommend!"
