50 reinterpretations of the Wire chair by Charles and Ray Eames

The famous Wire chair from Charles and Ray Eames is at the heart of a beautiful social, creative and artistic project. The association La Source, whose social and educational vocation involves artistic expression, has set up a partnership with the publisher Vitra's museum dedicated to design furniture: the Vitra Design Museum (Basel, Switzerland). The latter invited numerous French contemporary artists to revisit this iconic piece of twentieth century design. The sale of these works of art took place onDecember 18 at the Hotel de l'industrie in Paris, with the funds raised going to the La Source association's workshop for children in difficulty. The Wire chair (also known as DKR) was designed in 1948 for the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition organized by the Museum of Modern Art of New York. The welded steel wire used is reminiscent of designer Harry Bertoia's creations. This is no coincidence, as the latter actually worked in the Eames workshop during the 1940s. The couple was thus directly inspired by the designer's work. Since 1958, Vitra has offered somewhat different versions of the original model by adding leather and offering different colors. As you can see from the different photos, some artists have favored art over functionality. This is the case of the French designer Philippe Starck who paid tribute to the famous Pont Des Arts of Paris by hanging padlocks all over the vintage chair. It also becomes impossible to sit on Gloriette reinterpretation by Guillaume Delvigne. Finally, it is strongly discouraged to use the Eames Barbecue by Designstudio as a seat since it now serves as a barbecue!"

Conversely, other artists such as architect Jean-François Lesag - son of weaver François Lesage and a regular Louboutin collaborator - and Bruno Moinard wished to accentuate the comfort of the Wire Chair. So one wove threads through the holes to create a colorful pattern, while the second wrapped the chair in colored wool. Ionna Vautrin chose to cover her Gaufrette model with a cushion highlighting the braces.
