Vintage "hanging monkey" sculpture by Sergio Bustamente

Sergio Bustamante is a Mexican Artist and sculptor. Bustamante was born in Culiaca, Sinaloa in 1949 and studied architecture at the University of Guadalajara. Bustamante’s first art exhibition showcased paintings and papier-mâché figures at the Galeria Misracha in Mexico City in 1966. In 1975, Bustamante was part of a group of artists that established the “Family Workshop Studio” in Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico. In the mid-1970s, his practice expanded to include wood and bronze sculpture. Bustamante is best known for his colorful surrealist papier-mache, bronze, and mixed media sculptures. A world traveler, Bustamente has lived in Amsterdam, Mexico, and the United States. His art is inspired by his favorite science fiction writing from his childhood as well as the art of his native Mexico. After years abroad, Sergio Bustamante established a formal workshop to teach and promote art in Tlaquepaque, Mexico in 1975. It is still operational today. Many of Bustamante’s sculptures are built to be interactive. His piece ’In Search of Reason’ is 60 feet high, with a ladder that visitors are encouraged to climb. He also has art installed at the Guadalajara Zoo, the fountains. All of his objects are unique items. For example the hanging monkey, Sergio made a few but not 1 is the same, they are all unique. This monkey has some dents in his body as to be seen on the pictures and the branch seems not original but it is unique and in general good condition. Reference : 269811
